Quebec Vocational Training: A Practical Route to a High Paying Career

I am a product of Quebec’s vocational education system. I studied Industrial Drafting at Rosemount Technology Centre, part of the English Montreal School Board’s vocational network. At the time, I could not have predicted where that decision would lead. It became the foundation of a career that took paths I had never imagined when I first entered the program.
That is one of vocational education’s greatest strengths. It can prepare someone for an immediate occupation while also providing technical, problem-solving and workplace skills that remain useful as industries and careers change.

Quebec’s approach is distinctive within Canada. In many provinces, the most familiar skilled-trades route begins when a person finds an employer and registers as an apprentice. Classroom instruction is then completed in blocks between periods of paid workplace training. More on this another day.
Quebec places more formal education at the beginning of the journey. Students attend a vocational training centre and complete a competency-based program leading to a Diploma of Vocational Studies, DVS (DEP) or a Skills Training Certificate, STC (AEP). Programs generally range from 615 to 1,800 hours and may be offered in person, through distance learning, or in full- or part-time formats. Ex. An 1,800 hour program such as Automated Systems and Electromechanics, taught full time, would take about 18 months to complete.
Public vocational training is generally tuition-free for eligible Quebec residents, although students may still need to cover registration charges and costs for tools, safety equipment, clothing, books or transportation. Tuition-free does not mean cost-free. International students and some people arriving from outside Quebec may face different rules.
Quebec vocational centres offer training in much more than the traditional construction trades. Programs can lead to work in drafting, welding, machining, industrial mechanics, automotive repair, computing support, healthcare assistance, administration, food services, hairdressing and numerous other fields. The EMSB alone has six vocational centres offering programs across skilled trades, healthcare, business, aviation, hospitality and other sectors.
Before registering, however, prospective students should look beyond the program titles.
What credential will you receive, a DEP, an ASP specialization or a shorter AEP? Does the program prepare you directly for employment, or must you subsequently find an employer, register as an apprentice and complete workplace hours? Is the occupation regulated? Does it require a competency card, licence or certification examination? Is it a Red Seal trade, and how portable will the qualification be outside Quebec?
Students should also investigate local employment conditions, typical starting wages, program completion rates, schedules, equipment costs and whether employers are actually hiring inexperienced graduates. A trade described as “in demand” provincially may offer very different opportunities from one region to another.
People who already possess substantial work or life experience should also ask about Recognition of Acquired Competencies, or RAC. This process can assess competencies candidates already have and identify the missing training required toward a DEP or AEP. RAC deserves a separate discussion of its own. I'll tackle that another day.
Vocational education was the beginning of my career, not the limit of it. For the right student, a Quebec vocational program can provide an accessible and practical foundation for employment, advancement and eventually entrepreneurship. The key is to understand the entire pathway, not simply enroll in the shortest program or pursue the occupation with the most attractive salary claim.
